Östersund - Winter City
With a population of 58,000, Östersund is the only city in the county of Jämtland. It is situated by the Lake Storsjön, in line with the costal cities of Sundsvall and Trondheim. The mountain resort Åre is about an hour away, by car, while you get to Stockholm in 50 minutes, by air, and in less than five hours, by express train.
Swedens youngest University is located in Östersund. Mid Sweden University is one of Swedens big universitys with approximately 13 000 students in three campuses. Mid Sweden University provides higher education of a high standard undergraduate and post-graduate studies and in research.
The love of winter - enjoying it, as well as benefiting from it. The long, cold winter is the city´s greatest asset, along with the freshest air and the cleanest water of Europe. Additional to the Biathlon World Championship, Östersund is also host of many other national and international winter sports events, e.g. Arctic Cat Cup, World Enduro Championships, Cross-country skiing World Cup, Vertex 24 and World Junior Curling Championships.
Östersund has got the best cross-country skiing establishment of Northern Europe, with an all-the-year-round stadium, and 89 kilometres of tracks. Many of Sweden´s leading cross-country skiers also benefit from the test-lab at the National Winter Sports Centre.
Winter Park is a recreational area, downtown Östersund. Here Sweden´s longest ploughed skating track, Medvinden, starts out, and just across the sound, on Frösön, the ski slope is easily spotted. Not far from here, you will find Europe´s greatest funpark for children´s cross-country skiing, Frösö Skidlek.
The Arctura is the latest addition to the sky-line of Östersund. From the top floor restaurant you get a great view of Östersund and the island of Frösön. Frösön presents a marvellous view of the great lake Storsjön, with the Scandinavian mountains as a spectacular backdrop.
Storsjöyran ranks among the very best and most prestigious of Swedish rock festivals. Each summer some 55,000 tickets are sold for the event.
The cuisine of Jämtland, with regionally produced delicatessen, is famous. Among the specialities are cured meats of moose and reindeer, charr, cheese, bread and chocolates.
The most notorious inhabitant of the neighbourhood is the Great Lake Monster, Storsjöodjuret. While you are looking for it, remember there are many other places worth visiting, e.g. the museum Jamtli, the public baths of Storsjöbadet, the steamship Thomée, Moose Garden and the Frösö Zoo. The municipality is governed by a coalition of Social Democrats, the Green and the Left Party. It is also the greatest employer of the county, with almost 6,000 employees, and in 2006 the financial turnover was SEK 2,645m. Östersund was the first municipality ever in Sweden to receive environmental certification in accordance to both ISO 14001 and EMAS. Östersund ventures in renewable energy sources, e.g. district heating and natural gas, and it is among the most successful Swedish municipalities in reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The Mayor´s office, reception desk and switchboard are located at the Town Hall.
The tourist trade employs a great number of people here, but Östersund is also a commercial town, with a great spirit of enterprise and many small companies specialized in winter sports, outdoor life, events and adventure. The city centre offers great opportunities for shopping, not least for delicatessen. The number of employments was 31,494 in 2007, while the unemployment rate was 4.6 per cent.
