The Winter Festival in Östersund:

Cold meets Warmth, Darkness meets Light

For 10 winter days and nights, Östersund will be filled with fascinating light installations, spectacular sporting events, and a wide variety of culture and entertainment. The Winter City Östersund offers contrast, and that’s exactly what visitors will experience during the festivities. The festival consists of nearly 100 activities, both large and small, where culture and entertainment is mixed with light shows, sports, nightlife and cuisine.

The first Winter Festival was held in 2008, and again in 2010. And for the third time, between the 27th of January and 5th of February 2012, Östersund will once again host The Winter Festival, this time in connection with Championship Week (SM-veckanlänk till annan webbplats, öppnas i nytt fönster).

The town square will be occupied by a gleaming rainbow castle inspired by Islamic architecture and Gothic cathedrals when the Luminarium, Amozozo, visits our latitude for the first time. This year’s lightshows, and the entire festival, is characterized by participation and interactivity. Here you can play and work out with light, or project your own gigantic portrait with The Gigantomat. During this Winter Festival Östersund will be groundbreaking when Sweden’s first cable park on snow is inaugurated just a stone’s throw from the city centre. There you can experience OSD Cable Mayhem, a sensational jibbing event composed of music, fire and eye-catching lighting. But The Winter Festival is also a variety of performances and concerts in both warm parlours and on chilly, icy terrain; it’s about stargazing, yoiking, accessible, locally grown food and much more.

The Winter Festival is organised by Storsjöyran Evenemang AB on behalf of Östersund Municipality, with a wide cooperation of large and small, local and national players. Jämtkraft is the Prime Sponsor of The Winter Festival.
