Leisure time

Winter in the park

The outdoor life

The outdoor life is the heart of Östersund - literally! Skiing, ice-skating and ice fishing are all to be found at walking distance from the town centre.

The Lake Storsjön allows excellent opportunities for daily adventure and leisure time activities all the year round. Real winters with plenty of snow during four or five months entice the citizens out onto the ice. The steamship "Thomée" sails all summer — among other places to Verkö Castle.

There is an abundance of different establishments scattered throughout the Municipality. Cross-country skiing tracks, slalom slopes, long-distance ice-skating tracks, illuminated skiing tracks, riding stables, curling halls, bowling halls, sports centres, golf courses and snowmobile tracks are a few examples.

Many of the world´s elite in winter sports have taken part in competitions at Östersunds large ski stadium on various occasions.

Walking, picking wild mushrooms and berries in the forests or fishing are other ways of enjoying the fantastic nature.

Culture

Cultural amenities are plentiful. Dancing, theatre, picture houses, library, art galleries and museums are just some of those that are available in the Municipality.

The library has a nice selection of literature, everything from fiction to fact, with comfortable reading corners imbedded in an environment of plants and greenery.

The annual music/street festival "Storsjöyran" is one of Scandinavias largest music/street festivals. It takes place at the end of July and every year roughly 70 groups perform on the eight stages, which are specially constructed for the event.

At summertimes Jamtli History Land, Östersunds unique in- outdoor museum, you can relive history by experiencing country life in the farms and homesteads of times gone by. The  mythical Storsjöodjuret (Great Lake Monster), protected by law since 1986, has been given the honour of having it's very own exhibition!
